How to appeal a parking ticket, step by step
The full process, from the moment you get a ticket through to sending a letter that actually argues your case properly.
1. Work out what type of ticket it is
Council/TfL Penalty Charge Notice, or a private operator's Parking Charge Notice. See our council vs private guide if you're not sure, it changes everything downstream.
2. Check the deadline
Usually 28 days from the date on the notice. Note it down now, don't let the evidence-gathering step eat into it.
3. Decide if you actually have grounds
Unclear or missing signage, a payment that didn't register, a valid permit that wasn't recognised, a genuine emergency, or the contravention being simply wrong. If none of these are true and the ticket's accurate, appealing is unlikely to succeed.
4. Gather evidence
Photos of signage, payment confirmations, your permit, breakdown paperwork, whatever backs up your specific reason. Not required, but it makes a real difference to how strong the letter is.
5. Write the letter, or have it written properly
State clearly what's being challenged, the contravention code and date, and argue your specific grounds against the actual legal test that applies. This is the part most people find hardest. It's legal writing, not an email to customer service.
6. Submit it correctly
To the right body, in the right format, before the deadline. Getting this step wrong can lose you the right to appeal even with a strong case.
7. If rejected, escalate
You're not out of options after one rejection. See how the appeals process works for the formal representations and independent tribunal stages that follow.
Steps 5 and 6 are exactly what we do, the argument built around your specific facts and the correct legal framework, addressed to the right place. See how the appeals process actually works for what happens at each stage if you're rejected.
