What happens if you ignore a parking ticket

Short answer: it gets more expensive and harder to stop, not less. The two types escalate differently.

Council or TfL PCN

Miss the response window on a Notice to Owner and the council can issue a Charge Certificate, which adds 50% to what you owe and closes off your general right to appeal. Stay unpaid and it can be registered as a debt at the Traffic Enforcement Centre, followed by an Order for Recovery, and ultimately county court enforcement, bailiffs, in the worst case. Private Parking Charge Notice

A private operator can't use bailiffs or the Traffic Enforcement Centre, their route is different: escalating reminder letters, sometimes a debt collection agency, and ultimately a county court claim if they choose to pursue it. Ignoring it doesn't erase the debt, and an unanswered county court claim can end in a default judgment (a County Court Judgment, or CCJ) against you, which affects your credit file. It's less immediately aggressive than the council route in the early stages, but the eventual court risk is real if it's simply left unanswered indefinitely.

What doesn't change either way

Paying it is treated as accepting it, you can't appeal after paying. In both systems, the earliest stage is the cheapest and most flexible point to act: discounted rates, more grounds still open, less cost. Waiting doesn't make the decision easier, it just narrows it.
